Review of Annihilation (2018) by Paul T — 28 Jun 2018
After watching the mind-numbing The Strangers: Prey At Night, I was in the mood for something more cerebral and heard Annihilation fit that mold. This is that sci-fi film where you will discuss with your friends or read about online after watching it.
I really appreciate movies where people will have different interpretations of themes or metaphors and they all work. I gravitated toward one specific metaphor, but the one theme that definitely sticks out is self-destruction.
I heard people complain it feels too long, but I was so intrigued I didn't feel it dragged. Solid performances all around and the visuals were great. The world inside The Shimmer was beautiful and horrific, and there is one creature that had me unnerved.
Like most, I didn't pick up on everything because this isn't full of exposition and doesn't spoon feed you anything. But the more I looked into it, the more I appreciate what this movie does.
People also had issues with the ending and I understand why, but I was ok with it.
