Review of Annie Hall (1977) by Dean M — 01 Feb 2012
On one hand I find Woody Allen to be tedious and annoying, and on the other Diane Keaton is a breath of fresh air. Put the two together and it makes for an interesting and somewhat odd couple that provide so much commentary on life, sex and realtionships, that a second viewing is required to catch it all.
Woody's sexually obsessed and confused male point of view is one that I think all men can identify with and I'm sure the quirky neurotic Diane Keaton does the same for women. The writing is very clever and the blending of real/movie worlds keep things interesting.
Let's face it, Woody Allen is an acquired taste that I am yet to acquire so I was never going to praise this movie highly. It did beat two of my favourite movies, Star Wars and the much more satisfying The Goodbye Girl for Best Picture, so it must have something going for it?
