Review of Annie Get Your Gun (1950) by Kelvin M — 26 Dec 2009
Bright musical adaptation of the stage show chronicling the rise of the world's first female superstar, wild west sure-shot Annie Oakely.
Betty Hutton plays Oakley after replacing first-choice Judy Garland whose understated quality is sorely missed here. Hutton is OTT in her portrayal of the talented protagonist; any sense of the real Oakley's inner strength and independence is all but lost in her wide-eyed, one-dimensional performance.
The film won the Oscar for music and features several fine songs - including the ever-popular 'Anything You Can Do' and Berlin's towering 'No Business Like Show Business' - which Hutton delivers with aplomb but it's the time between singing which disappoints.
