Review of Annie (1982) by Eytan D — 30 Nov 2014
I remember enjoying "Annie" so much more when I was a child. Unfortunately, at 20 years old, I realize that this film adaptation of a classic musical can't hold a candle to its Broadway source material.
It's not awful, for sure. The film has some good performances going for it. Carol Burnett's Miss Hannigan is to die for, and so are Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters as Rooster and Lily St. Regis.
The songs are still enjoyable ("Tomorrow" is, was, and ever shall be a Broadway classic). However, Alieen Quinn's Annie is slightly bratty and less loveable than Andrea McArdle, some songs added for the movie aren't quite as memorable as the ones that originated from Broadway, and John Huston just seems like an odd choice for director.
It's no "The Wiz" (that, to this day, is still the worst movie musical ever made), but "Annie" is still quite the disappointment.
