The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 were supposedly based on true stories, and because of this, it always seemed like the artistic license of the creators was limited. Those movies were great, but they couldn't really go above and beyond to deliver more scares than the source material permitted.

Annabelle: Creation, by contrast, seems to be completely fictional. As such, they haven't needed to hold back. What results is a film that's decidedly deadlier than The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, and Annabelle 1. While it doesn't offer anything that hasn't been done before, it's still a must-watch for fans of the genre.
