Review of Anna Karenina (2012) by Wendy K — 04 Feb 2013
I went in to this movie with some expectations because I knew it was nominated for mostly its artistic direction / cinematography etc. Those sort of things, and had a faint idea of what the plot was about, but man, after watching this movie, did the producers throw the entire finance amount designated for plot developing into art direction and gave plot developing mere change? Because the story was so flimsy and boring.
Keira Knightley is so annoying in this movie. I don't have much of an opinion on her because she is a gorgeous being and she's in the movie series I've ever fell in love with (e.g. Pirates of the Caribbean), but she has a tendency to choose highly unsympathetic characters to portray.
I'm not sure if I felt sorry for Jude Law (her character's husband) either. He was such a monotonic expressionless ass. Actually, all of the characters were asses, save for Levin and Kitty - bless their young untainted hearts.
Anyway yeah, there's a lot of talk about how heartstoppingly gorgeous and beautifully stylized this movie is, but if there isn't a solid story line to keep me interested then I do not like it.
The funny parts aren't -that- funny either! Anyhow. It's a decent film, and the first half is quite good, but after a while, yes, you will just be waiting for a major character death to happen.
