Review of Anna Karenina (2012) by Ellenrebekah A — 03 Apr 2013
Lately I've watched movies that a strict tv mother would call cautionary tales; this would be one, and I agree.
All those other stories that tell you to follow your heart? There is another book that says "the heart is deceitful above all things". Here is the result of following your heart; you have to live with the consequences of your actions.
So who was right? Anyone? Karenin? Dolly?
Levin? And what was it he understood?
Jane Austen talks about disposing of oneself with it without affection. It hurts the heart to be without it, but there are rewards to acting rightly.
I haven't read the book; don't know if I ever will, but there are my two cents on the subject.
As a production, it took time for me to see the story through the staging. The sumptuousness of the clothing and party sets brought to mind the revolution to come and the disparity between rich and poor. The attitude toward Anna reminded me of Marie Antoinette.
I do recommend it.
