Review of Anna Karenina (2012) by Kelly H — 04 Jan 2015
This is just all wrong. Anna Karenina is a powerful story with a tragic ending. It doesn't need all of these fancy touches like setting the whole thing on a stage or having everyone frozen around the main characters.
It's like the filmmakers didn't trust Tolstoy's material to stand on its own. As a result, it takes a long time to get into the movie because the stuff at the beginning is so distracting. The film gets better when it drops some of those things away, but you never really care about what happens to Anna or Vronsky.
Plus I think most people even if they haven't read the book know what's going to happen to Anna at the end. (cue the train).
