Review of Anna Karenina (2012) by Matty S — 16 Aug 2013
Of course we all know the story and Joe Wright and Tom Stoppard are more than aware of this fact. The plot may be familiar but the style in which this film unspools it is completely new and unique.
For the most part, the film appears to be staged in a dilapidated theatre complete with almost musical synchronized choreography. Though this style might read as pretentious, it isn't. Wright directs this adaptation of Anna Karenina to new heights. Theatrical and dazzling without sacrificing the timelessness of Tolstoy's novel, this film is a joy to watch.
Keira Knightley is stunningly beautiful and effective in the title role. But, the movie actually belongs to Jude Law who gives an outstanding turn as Aleksei. Beautifully rendered and unique. Tolstoy's story is given new life -- "artificial life" perhaps but this new reading of the material is inspired.
