Review of Anna Karenina (1935) by Michelle F — 20 Feb 2008
I'm not nuts aobut how I have to wait 20 minutes to see garbo in this version. it's really not about vronsky, especially when you have a stolid actor like fredric march playing him. march didn't do romantic leads well, excepting his comedies like nothing sacred and the royal family.
garbo is worth the wait. she is lyrical and deep as the notes of a cello as anna. she gets a great balance from basil rathbone as karenin. because this was a studio film, you have to wonder about some of the other casting decisions like o'sullivan and freddie bartholomew.
but that's hollywood for you.
