Review of Anna (2019) by Kenr — 21 Dec 2021
After a promising opening, this mess quickly falls over as yet another air-headed action flick for the growing number of space cadets who look but don’t necessarily think about their movies. Luc Besson writes and directs as if he’s working on three projects at the same time – with none of them getting the attention they need to succeed.
Anna is all style and ‘look’ but very little brain, it’s packed with so much ridiculous over-the-top action that it leaves any thinking viewer feeling nauseous. Here he gives us a ‘super’ female assassin who’s modeled after James Bond (or should that be Jane Bond?) She’s supposed to desperately want to retire from the service but is so good at dealing out death and damage that she’s indispensable.
With the now over-used foul-mouthed Helen Mirren playing her cold-blooded employer, prodding her mercilessly from one sickening despotic assassination to the never-ending next - it soon runs up a toll of disinterest and a longing for it all to end a lot quicker than it does.
Only for those who can stand sordid color and movement, with little (or nothing) else of merit...other than an interesting musical sound-scape by Eric Serra that deserves a far better movie! Mindlessly pathetic.
