Review of Anjaana Anjaani (2010) by Hetvee S — 14 Oct 2010
"Anjaana Anjaani" is a spectacularly shot, light-hearted and breezy film, strictly for fans of the genre. Logic and detailing are not the strengths of this romantic comedy, which is a faithful offspring of the Yash Raj brand of filmmaking (ie popular & pretty actors in the lead, designer clothes throughout, some exotic foreign locations, and the mandatory six songs), which Director Siddharth Anand is only too happy to churn out: again and again and again.
What the film lacks in novelty, passion and believability, it makes up with consistently brilliant cinematography (Ravi K Chandran), some fantastic music (Vishal & Shekhar), and a few laughs. But more importantly, the film remains engaging for the most part because of its lead actors - despite poorly written parts, both Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra are watchable. While their primary job is to look great, take off their clothes every now and then, dance, deliver dramatic lines, and cry, they manage not to make the whole thing seem completely ridiculous, because they can both actually act. Ranbir Kapoor is especially endearing, and infuses his part (and consequently, the film), with some life.
There is nothing particularly special about this film, but go ahead and watch it if you are fond of the good old masala bollywood romantic musicals. You know exactly how it will pan out, but it would be an enjoyable journey nonetheless.
