Review of Anita (2013) by Thomas W — 23 Jun 2014
A quietly compelling documentary about a highly private woman, Anita is a documentary about one woman who answered a private questionnaire regarding a prospective Supreme Court Justice in 1991 thinking she was simply doing her duty to the nation when acknowledging some character flaws she had encountered while working for a man who was being considered for the highest court in the land.
When she was subpoenaed to testify, her life was turned upside down by the political right who ridiculed, lampooned and mercilessly savaged HER character (saying she was lying and seeking fame and fortune when those were the furthest things from her mind).
After Thomas spoke on his own behalf demonizing Ms. Hill as an opportunist, the panel neglected to call any of the OTHER women subpoenaed to give similar testimony regarding (sexual) workplace impropriety.
Hill was branded a liar and Thomas was confirmed; but she became an iconic figure for many women who found themselves in similar situations. If one wants to question her honesty vs. his ... consider his Supreme Court vote last week that said it was okay to lie and commit fraud on personal applications when buying a gun.
He believes it is okay to lie and Anita believed in telling the truth. In America, which one won?
