Flawless, and I mean FLAWLESS, directing, a lot of superb acting and excellent music. The only shortcoming was with the script which lacked an active protagonist, instead he kind of meanders in and out of scenes with other stronger characters.
In this case, the analogy of the animal kingdom works well with the character, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating when you just want him to take action.
