Review of Animal Kingdom (2010) by Tom B — 14 May 2011
Felons (Animals) in a Melbourne Kingdom.
This dark, gritty Australian film is full of intensity, effort and drama. However, for me it was hard to warm to, and it failed to grip me, even with pleasing visuals, themes and tones. It is eery, building up tension and suspense, but fails to deliver any real punches (apart from shootings). The characters are somewhat shallow and again hard to love, but the acting is noteworthy. This felons versus the law film is over styled, darkened up and it's every emphasis is to disturb and chill. It has minimal dialogue and for me it could have benefited from more explaining and introduction. As it is it is like going undercover, without a briefing.
It's no Chopper or Horseman, but it is ambitious, unique, powerful and image wise mighty. I praise it visually but for me personally it tries too hard, does not say enough and lacks any charm. However, I'm sure some movie fans will love this, because it is something different and has all of the ingredients of a notable underground, modern action drama.
