Review of Animal Kingdom (2010) by Julien A — 15 May 2011
Normally crime thrillers have a nice standard pattern they like to stick to. Most of them based on either the Godfather or Scorsese's New York crime films. This is regardless of where they're set.
Most British crime films seem to tie in one or the other. So its nice to see Animal Kingdom avoiding the pitfalls and weaving an intricate path of grey for its characters to wander around in. In particular there's an unexpected shooting partway through that shows us anyone is vulnerable.
The bullet doesn't care who it rips through. While not all the actors gave great performances (Joel Edgerton was fantastic) the script is good enough that just saying the lines is will suffice. I know some of the younger actors might have felt a little intimidated by the likes of Jacki Weaver and Guy Pearce.
Deserved its recognition last year and is a far more sensible movie than The Town while dealing with the same kind of people.
