Review of Animal Kingdom (2010) by Denise O — 17 Jan 2012
Animal Kingdom did for me this year what The Hurt Locker did last, kept my stomach in one big knot from start to finish. Unfortunately being a small independent film from Australia, it didn't get much media coverage here; too bad. If it had it would probably be up for a lot more awards than just the well-deserved nomination for Jacki Weaver as another "will go to all means to protect her family" mother.
When a teenage boy's mother dies of a heroin overdose (in front of him I might add) he's fortunate enough to go live with his aunt and her sons (and I'm being sarcastic when I say fortunate), a group of bank robbers who the police have had their eye on for quite sometime. When one of the sons is ambushed by the police, the eldest boy, Pope, just released from prison, vows revenge. Quite frankly, between you and me, I think Pope may have a few mental issues; paranoid sociopath springs to mind.
Albeit, not the feel good movie of the year, this is a great movie.
Kudos to: Jacki Weaver (Acting), Ben Mendelsohn (Acting), David Michod (Screenplay/Director).
