Review of Animal Kingdom (2010) by Jonathan P — 03 Oct 2012
Getting past the strong Aussie accents can be a bit daunting but adds to the appeal of the gritty flick. James Frecheville's portrayal of Joshua J. Cody is brilliantly monotonous. David Michod is able to capture the grit and grime of a modern day crime family and it makes for a compelling drama that interests while failing to mesmerize.
Guy Pearce is impressive as Det. Nathan Leckie and all of the Cody clan give good performances but it is Jackie Weaver playing Mama Cody who really steals the show. Animal Kingdom is a good film and one I wouldn't discourage people from seeing but would stop short of recommending it to the casual film-goer.
