Review of Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008) by Hannah M — 31 Jan 2009
I was somewhat sceptical about watching this little chick-flick, but marriage is about sacrifice and my wife wanted to see it.
Essentially, it is Bridget Jones for kids. There are several parallels that can be observed easily, but I won't reveal them here for the sake of those who have not seen it yet.
However, I can reveal that it was a refreshing change when compared to my usual viewing preferences and I thought it was pretty good.
It is typical Gurinder Chadha fare though, so expect a girly teen comedy-drama in the vein of 'Bend it Like Beckham'.
The acting isn't brilliant and the dialogue was occasionally irritating to my male mind due to the somewhat forced, meant-to-be-cool-but-not words like "Hunkorific" and things of that nature; usually perpetrated by the supporting characters.
The Britishness of the film works in its favour, as does the occasional presence of Karen Taylor, the mop-haired QI regular, Alan Davies, and T4's Steve Jones.
Overall: Good.
