Review of Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie (2014) by Alana O — 17 Aug 2014
If you don't know the Nerd you can't fully appreciate this movie. I'm not sure you could go into this at all without knowing the guy from the beginning. That being said, without bias I think this is a pretty decent movie.
All things considered, the funding, the niche level, the nostalgia that goes with the experience only serves to hit a certain market. I've been watching the Nerd for a long time and I wanted to give him my money becasue he got to realize his dream.
That being said I am biased but I want to think of the movie as it relies on it's own merits. It's cheesy, it's campy, it's stupid, it's funny but all the while you know it's self aware.
That's important when you make things like these, it has to be self aware. That's where the humor is and this on top of the fact that he has a (limited) budget to get what he wants creatively to screen, it all just fits.
So what did I not like? Well the ET puppet, the toys rolling down hills, the campiness tends to overstay it's welcome but that's ok. We can't fault it for being cheap! The fisrt 30 minutes or so of the movie is gold! Then it slowly goes off the rails, which is fine but the movie looks more cheap as it goes on.
The review, being the final pay off, should have been better as well, he doesn't seem to take into considreation what the game did to the market even thought it's mentioned in the beginning of the movie.
That's all small gripes, I laughed, I cried (not really) it was fun, I'm really glad he got to do this, so if you're a fan at any capacity see this!
