Review of Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) by Charlene J — 10 Jun 2007
Simply one of the best gangster films to come out of the Warner Brothers studios. A story of nature vs. nurture and a commentary on poverty, the dysfunctions of society, and the corruption of the judicial system, Angels with Dirty Faces is superior in its screenplay.
But it couldn't have achieved such excellence if it weren't for the brilliance of director Michael Curtiz, a man who is too often underrated or unacknowledged for his genius.
