Review of Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) by Dave N — 03 Oct 2007
One of the all-time great films, and possibly my favourite too. Cagney is superb as ever as the gangster idolised by the street kids, but asked to create a better impression by his priestly old friend.
Excellent performances all-round, and a critique of the cult of celebrity. As long ago as 1938, kids picked up 'bad influences' from the movies, though the solution in this movie may be a bit severe for some today!
Though on the other hand...
