Review of Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) by Darren J — 08 Oct 2007
Jimmy Cagney has played the hardman gangster in so many movies you might be forgiven for thinking that this is just one more to add to that list. For most of the movie this is just that as Cagney turns from street hoodlum to crime lord until his betrayal at the hands of Bogart seals his fate.
It is here that the movie finally works its magic and transcends its 30's gangster origins as Cagney has to make the choice between his reputation (all he really has) and the lives of a few urchins destined to follow him into a life of crime.
Your heart will leap into your throat and you will not be able to get this film out of your mind for days. Exceptional performances from the entire cast and Cagney outshines them all. Brilliant.
