Review of Angels in the Outfield (1994) by Kay B — 09 Jan 2010
Quite a charming film, based on a film from 1951, updated for today's audiences. This is one of those remakes that are few and far between. This is actually a pretty good film, this site ranks it as 12 rotten and 6 fresh tomatoes and I find it hard to believe that, that many people hated it as apposed to enjoying it.
The film is filled with the cliche's; I know, but when you really think about it, this cliched story is a classic. A losing team is at the brink, when they get a miracle, in a young boy, who just wants to be with his dad. Danny Glover plays a has been, who is now the manager of the California Angels, who rank at the bottom of the leagues barrel. He's harsh-ed mouth and extremely rude, even to the kids, until he starts to believe in what the kid says.
Tony Danza, most known for his role as Tony Micelli on Who's The Boss, comes in as an aging pitcher, who is called upon to pitch for the season, despite Glovers beliefs that he can win the season.
Each character in the film have an important that pays off a the end. The character of the kids find themselves in need of a parent and the coach is in need of children, so its a nice way that they find themselves connecting. Christopher Lloyd plays Al, the lead Angel, who goes on to reprise his role in 2 DTV sequels.
I would say for anyone who doesn't mind the cliched happy ending and the cliched jokes, to go see this. Its a fun movie to pass the time and share with your family.
4 out of 5 stars.
