Review of Angela's Ashes (1999) by Kathy K — 18 May 2009
Really depressing movie; however, the trials of a mother trying to raise her children the best she can while dealing with an alcoholic husband rings too true in Irish culture. Love the scene when Frank McCourt's character is frantically chomping on the communion host.
Also love the Catholic schoolroom scene where the priest is expounding on greed, the soon to be received communion money and the poor children in Africa. Great movie but in the future, I would like to see more Irish movies with themes that are more humorous and hopeful.
Movies that encompass a more comprehensive picture of my Irish heritage which includes not only alcoholics and survivor's but writer's, poets, Celtic warriors, musicians, dancers and comedians as well.
