Review of Angela's Ashes (1999) by Sarah B — 16 Oct 2008
This is a surprisingly faithful adaptation of Frank McCourt's stirring memoir of his poverty-stricken, Irish-Catholic childhood. Anyone watching this should be warned that the mood of this film is very depressing, and no children should ever have to suffer what these kids go through.
Yet, in reality, they do. Powerful and heartbreaking performances from the cast help this film in its attempt to reach the emotional intensity of the book, even if I don't think it quite gets there.
However, it's good that the director also knew to include a few of the book's more humorous moments, giving it a hint of black comedy that makes it easier to watch.
