Review of Angel Heart (1987) by J D — 29 Apr 2008
I've been meaning to watch this for a long time. The only thing I really knew about it was that Bill Cosby was really perturbed that Lisa Bonet was in it. And now I know why. This is a great stylistic detective story with some extremely spooky and disturbing themes, maybe a little silly near the end, but still effective.
I kinda had an idea where the story was headed about halfway through, but I'm a sucker for a well-made detective story, and this one is that, with the supernatural/voodoo elements adding a unique twist.
Mickey Rourke makes for a great private eye, and it's cool to see a young (and thin!) Pruitt Taylor Vince. Not for everyone, but I thought it was a pretty effective thriller disguised as a period gumshoe tale.
