Review of Angel Eyes (2001) by Alex M — 26 Nov 2005
(SHORT REVIEW):
Angel Eyes is not a particularly memorable or successful film, but it is surprisingly involving in a low-key way. Although the film was marketed as a mystery/thriller, it is actually more of a contemplative love story that delves deeper into issues of fate and responsibility than the average Hollywood film. Angel Eyes benefits from the two lead performances by Jennifer Lopez and Jim Caviezel, who create characters that we immediately care for. Lopez reminds us that she is very capable at playing a down-to-Earth, working-class woman...something that is often forgotten when the media gets caught up in all of the "J-Lo" hype. The film as a whole has a relaxed pace, although it occasionally makes a few missteps and becomes too melodramatic for its own good. Angel Eyes will not leave a terribly strong impression (in fact, I have already forgotten some of its scenes), but it's still a refreshingly thoughtful film that offered more than I was expecting.
