Review of And When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007) by Steve R — 10 Oct 2007
Good British film, in the vein of Mike Leigh, but doesn't quite hit the mark. It does the usual trick of using doyennes of British cinema to add, presumably, gravitas to a film that is slightly lacking in terms of characterisation and an occasionally clunky script.
Colin Firth is mostly good, though with a couple of execrable moments. Juliet stevenson's character needed developing- the film seemed to avoid any attempt to really look at her thoughts and feelings, except in the most cursory way.
Jim Broadbent was the best by far in a film filled with talent, but ultimately failing to live up to its potential.
