Review of And When Did You Last See Your Father? (2007) by Elaine M — 21 Mar 2009
If you have to see a film about an old man who gets cancer and dies, this is the only one you need to see; not because it's any good, but because it's the most typical film of its kind you are ever likely to see.
It's based on a book, which was based on a true story- now I know death is sad, but like, nothing happens in this whole film. He gets cancer, his son gets increasingly sad about it, and then he dies (and it's cancer, so it's not like you don't see that coming).
Maybe it works better as a book, and maybe nothing is meant to happen and it's meant to be just moving and emotional, but it ends up being pretty boring, and just something we've all seen a thousand times before.
The cast is pretty good, especially Gina McKee and Juliet Stevenson, but they are not enough to make up for the emptiness of the movie. Ok as far as these things go, but really you aren't missing out if you ignore it.
