Review of And the Band Played On (1993) by Mannie L — 04 Aug 2008
Dramatization of Randy Shilts's experiences at the leading edge of AIDS research. This is a must for biologists. The science is well done (even down to the props; when they show the issues of Science magazine that the first HIV papers were supposedly in, they are the REAL issues with the REAL articles to which they are dramatizing.
Matthew Modine gives a solid performance but it is really the entirety of the ensemble cast that makes this flik so great. HBO produced this movie but it's big screen quality and is a touching honest look at the AIDS epidemic as it developed in the 80's.
