Review of Anatomy of a Murder (1959) by Michael H — 05 Apr 2010
This was one of the best courtroom dramas ever made. I don't usually say this, but one of the best things this move has going for it is the length. Usually courtroom dramas go like this:
1. Brilliant but flawed lawyer takes open/shut case.
2. Gets crushed in the beginning.
3. Finds his confidence, wins in the end.
This one wasn't like that. This has James Stewart pulling out every sleazy trick in the book in order to get his client off, while George C. Scott (who was knock-your-socks-off amazing in this) matching him punch for punch. At the end of this movie it felt like a war between the two attorneys, and the fact that it clocks in at nearly three hours really contributes to that.
