Review of Anatomy of a Murder (1959) by Roger R — 08 May 2013
There are many great court room dramas and many great courtroom attorneys. There is something about the casting of this film, Jimmy Stewart, the perfect honest down to earth no nonsense attorney, Eve Arden the sardonic secretary who loves him, Ben Gazzara the morally suspect soldier accused of murder and Lee Remick his frankly slutty wife,.
George C. Scott as Claude Dancer the hard core out of down hired gun who is frankly a bit of a bastard. The minor role casting and performances are equally spot on. The film said to be 160 minutes never drags for a second and is full of delicious little exegetic detours blending perfectly to the thrust of the narrative.
In short, brilliant. This could also be one of the first films where the notion of "Trailer trash" is dealt with.
