Review of Analyze This (1999) by Catherine M — 07 Apr 2010
In case people were wondering if Robert DeNiro could do comedy (honestly, I don't think that question would have crossed my mind if I had been in the 80s), the answer is a definite "yes." Not only does Analyze This have a really excellent premise (with a very good title to boot), it is incredibly hilarious.
A lot of the success of the outcome of Analyze This can be attributed to the chemistry between Billy Crystal and Robert DeNiro. I have yet to see a movie from either of them I really didn't like, and Analyze This is no exception. The comedic timing and chemistry between them is fantastic. I loved the seriousness and intimidating presence Robert DeNiro had and the way Billy Crystal could play off this feeling.
The plot is a little basic and there isn't a whole lot that happens that's outside of the audience's expectations. The gags are pretty unpredictable, though, and they are pretty funny. There's a lot to like about this movie, mostly because of how likable Robert DeNiro's character becomes. In fact, his character has quite a bit of depth to him. He's a crime boss who needs to see a psychiatrist so it's pretty obvious how these confrontations and conversations would go. And that's exactly the way the audience wants it.
Also, I cannot imagine any other actors in these roles, the sign of great acting and well portrayed characters. Billy Crystal is nothing short of hilarious as the psychiatrist and Robert DeNiro was absolutely the greatest choice as the crime boss who needs therapy.
Analyze This is a definite recommendation. It would go on my list of must-see comedies. It's funny and has a lot of likable characters. Some of the minor characters are fairly forgettable, but every other part of the movie works very well.
8/10.
