Review of An Unfinished Life (2005) by Chris V — 28 Dec 2009
This is the fourth film I have seen by Lasse Hallstrom, after The Cider House Rules, Chocolat and What's Eating Gilbert Grape, all of which I love, including this one, which is why Hallstrom is such a favourite director of mine.
Hallstrom's films are always visually very beautiful, with themes of family dysfunction, independence and acceptance, but without ever indulging in sentimentality. Hallstrom is also one of those rare directors who can make you laugh and cry and very often both at the same time which is why he is so great!
This particular film takes place after a tragic accident which changed a family's life as they knew it. A decade later past and present meet when the estranged daughter-in-law (Jennifer Lopez) comes to her father-in-law (Robert Redford) for help while old wounds of guilt and anger resurface.
A truly poignant film about redemption and forgiveness highly recomended.
