Review of An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) by Jerome C — 25 Dec 2007
While watching the final scene with Gere carrying Winger to their utopia, I said: â??if it freezes here this is the worst movie ever.â?? And then it went ahead and did 400 Blows. Unbelievable. However, it isnâ??t quite the worst movie ever.
But possibly the worst directed film ever. What is Hackford thinking? Most of the time it seemed like he was taking obscure cues from the dialogue and then staging them in dramatically exaggerated ways that left no room for the viewer to enjoy anything close to subtle.
Furthermore the performances are weak and underdone by a director who thinks the beauty of cinema is in articulating the message in over-stylized or under-stylized (and therefore naff) scenes of dismal ineptitude.
Another thing: the sergeant is probably the weakest supporting antagonist in the history of mankind. Just shocking. Painful even.
