Review of An Ideal Husband (1999) by Ali J — 14 Apr 2008
A good little period piece but not amazing. Very well cast, particularly the sartorially unsurpassable Rupert Everett as Lord Goring and the wonderfully spiteful and coniving Mrs Chievley, played by Julianne Moore.
Being an Oscar Wilde play the script is faultless, but the pace of the film is lumpy and despite being a film adaptation, the sets are no better than a mediocre West End theatre production - no imagination or flamboyance (oh, except the steam room!) A genteel way to spend a Saturday evening.
..Good sideburn rating: 4/10 - a little too neat in this era of fashion but still present in most cases. Marks lost for horrible moustaches! Presence of sartorially elegant men: 11/10 -Off the sartorial richter scale! Edwardian fashion on Rupert Everett, hmmm, it doesn't get any more stylish than that!
