Review of An Education (2009) by Irina T — 06 Apr 2011
Such a beautiful movie that deeply explores a main character whose nature is rarely portrayed in today's shows - academic intelligence. As a person under a scholarship, I completely understand how she feels (except the fact that she always gets straight A's and I don't) when it comes to being oppressed by family members about the major I want to do in the future, and the school I want to go to.
Despite having a run-off-the-mill story, An Education is presented in such a way that is not cliched, especially in its acting and script. It's beautiful to see the relationship between Jenny and David, especially when he covers her with a blanket after he has seen her body. I think that scene is so significant in showing that this older man still actually has some tenderness and love within him. It's most likely the midlife crisis that he's going through that propels him to commit an affair. In addition, it's a quite unusual scenario as a man would usually be tempted to just grope a woman's body after she has shown it.
What appeals to the audience most is the fact that some scenes of the movie are set in high-class areas found in England, and that the audience is given an insight on the reason why David, Helen, and Dominic are able to lead such glamorous lives. The "education" that Jenny receives after seeing David is truly significant as it is something that schools would not teach regardless of any circumstance, especially during the 1960s when schools were more conservative.
Despite such great aspects of the movie, the ending is too fairy-tale like as there may be instances where pregnancy is involved, and the main character does not experience this sort of trauma that will TRULY change her life forever. In addition, the audience is not given an insight to David's life enough, as we are only shown his charmingly deceitful side and nothing much of his other personalities.
Overall, this movie is still emotionally powerful especially with the dilemmas that the main character has to go through when it comes to her life, as she's very well-connected with her family and her parents play a major role in her life. This movie is truly recommended for youths who are bored and think that they can find an easy way out in life.
This is also for those who think that they are so pressurized in life but they are actually not.
8/10.
