Review of An Education (2009) by Being T — 23 Dec 2010
The movie was wonderful. The plot was certainly not conventional. Unlike most coming of age films, the movie teaches morals through scenes that aren't wearingly dull, provocative perhaps?
It captivates the viewers to through the eyes of Jenny (Carey Mulligan), a 16-year old girl that is beguiled by the things that a man, nearly twice her age, has to offer. In the 1960's, Paris, fashionable clothes, concerts, parties, and everything but real education was certainly inviting. David (Peter Sarsgaard), gives her everything that she could possibly want. Cigarettes from Paris, designer clothes, presents, trips to Oxford (her first plan, before she met him.), and everything a 'boyfriend' could possibly offer, more even. He entices Jenny's parents, and they couldn't find anyone more suitable for their daughter. Only to find out, after he proposed, and after he gave permission for Jenny to throw away her future by letting go of Oxford, and getting married to a diplomatic man that had impressed them heartily, that he wasn't what they thought he was.
It's plot may not be able to please everyone, but it surely is entertaining, smart, and educating.
5-stars. :).
