Review of An Education (2009) by Sara T — 19 Nov 2011
Let's see where to begin with this one. The camera-work on this one is quite moving-. Its slow pans and slight zooms really draw viewers into the character's dialogue. The acting is suburb and the film also very accurately recreates 1960's England, highlighting the social dilemmas, particularly of sexism, of the time.
It beckons audiences to ask the question--what is the value of education and importantly, what IS an education? With this said, I wasn't as impressed with the character development, particularly of con-man, David, who although is a huge presence in the story-line, his motivations and background is murky.
Further, while this movie is ultimately about the meaning of an education, and importantly, Jenny's re-conceptualization of meaning of an education, in the end, it was still unclear to me how she did so.
