Review of An Education (2009) by Tanvir M — 08 Dec 2011
An extra ordinary coming of age film, which triumphantly announces the arrival of a superbly talented actress, Carey Mulligan, who is a revelation in the film. By turns innocent and world weary, fragile and strong, sure and uncertain, full of wide eyed wonder she moves through an astonishing range of human emotions to track and delineate how a girl graduates to womanhood, through good times and trying times.
The role education plays in transforming life, and at times making it doomed for dullness, is explored in a fascinating way (which was of personal interest to me, as an education policy analyst:), providing much food for thought.
Beautiful screen play by Nick Hornby is full of wit and verve and transcends the usual stuffiness of period films and provides a contemporary freshness, while retaining the historical authenticiy of the era depicted in the film.
Wonderful and worth every accolade it has received so far. I look forward to tracking Carey Mulligan's ascension to greatness in the years to come.
