Review of An Education (2009) by Tom B — 15 Aug 2012
An adaptation by Nick Hornby of a memoir by Lynn Barber, An Education evokes a time when girls and parents were innocent and could be romanced by a charming con man. Stunning performances by Carey Mulligan, Peter Saarsgaard, Dominic Cooper, Rosamund Pike, & Alfred Molina, allow the audience to believe that an intelligent girl like Jenny could be seduced and sucked in by David, even when she realizes he is a con man. David, beneath his charming and sophisticated front is a serial, borderline pedophile (an older and higher class Alfie).
Wonderful script, scenic direction evoke an era, hopefully gone by, when the world was uncynical enough to allow a girl's life nearly to be ruined by a hollow man.
