Review of An Awfully Big Adventure (1995) by Stewart S — 13 Jun 2007
Hugh Grant shows us that he CAN act, and as a nasty gay theatre director. Wonderful film, perfectly cast, even down to Prunella Scales (Sybil!) as the pragmatic Theatre Director. Lots of clever parallels with the Peter Pan story ("For death is but an awfully big adventure") and a theatrical twist in the end too, though in this it is appropriate.
Georgina Cates is marvellously innocent and likeable. My favourite character is Peter Firth's Bunny, a soft-hearted stage manager spurned in love by Hugh's vicious director. Certainly Mike Newell's best film (and he should stick to quality drama rather than dull muck like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire).
