Review of An American Werewolf in Paris (1997) by Tom T — 03 Apr 2008
If using drugs is drug abuse, and being violent is physical abuse, then consider this movie franchise abuse. This film didnt have to be, An American Werewolf in London was perfect and in no way required a sequal, An American Werewolf in Paris is a huge insult the 1981 original. However dont take my word for it because something I have noticed is that Fans of the Original hate this one, but considering there was a 16 year gap, new fans whom were unaware of the original seem to really like it, and may preffer the CGI effects to the puppetry effects of the original, so we get this intresting outcome where fans who grew up with the cult classic original hate this one, where as next generation of fans who watched ( I use the word watch as time has proven this was not a cult classic) this one may not like its older big brother.
If there had to be a sequal to American werewolf in London, it would have been nice to make it more like the original, this one lacks the magic that the first one offered, there is no London,no original cast, no cockney jibes, no porno theatre, no funny zoo scenes, no fun...They should have stuck more with the original, I wanted to go back to the slaughtered lamb, I wanted to see what would hapen next.
AAWIP comes across to me as more of a fan made sequal rather than an original/official sequal, something that confusses me is that I had this movie on VHS and it had a really funky sound track and impressive ending where Andy (main charecter) and Serphine (heroine) bungie jump off the statue of Liberty. When I got it on DVD it was a different verson, there were more scenes added (though didnt really help the film) with the funky sound track removed and a different ending in which the two protagonists of the story have a baby in which the camera zooms on the baby only to have her open her eyes to reveal wolf eyes. I hope they bring the original VHS version out on DVD cause that does better the movie.
Bottom line, not a bad film, would like it better if it had a different name and had no link to AAWIL, because it cant live up to it, not as scary, not as funny, not as tragic, not as intense, no comparrison.
