Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Paul W — 23 Jan 2011
30 years on, this film is still revered for its (then) cutting-edge special effects and Make-up. Indeed the werewolf transformation scenes are still amazing, showing a real art - those few minutes depicting David Naughton's Lycanthropic shapeshift in the living room of a London terrace form the fulcrum for film.
It will make you feel nostalgic for a time of in-camera mechanical effects that nowadays could all be done by a 13-year old on a macbook. Besides the effects, I wasn't blown away. I don't think the film has aged particularly well, I would bet that most people who fly the banner for this first saw it when they were 14.
Jenny Agutter is the biggest surprise of all, being absolutely terrible as the love interest. I feel compelled to watch some more of her back catalogue to see if she is this bad in all her films...
