Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Brian W — 18 Jan 2012
"An American Werewolf in London" is a classic in the Horror genre as it is the rare work that combines both Horror and Comedy and actually works. A film about a brutal killing monster that infects an American traveling through London and transforms him into a killing machine seems quite the terrifying plot.
The fact that his murdered friend appears to him stating that he's in limbo along with whoever else that is killed by the newly transformed wolf and his body rotting worse with every appearance. The film is renowned for it's state of the art make-up effects that went on to create the category of awards for the Academy and won the first as well.
Rick Baker was a pioneer in this way and was deserving of the win for his ingenious and gruesome effects and designs and that's what makes the film so great, even by today's standards!
