Review of An American Werewolf in London (1981) by Simon H — 23 Jun 2014
An American Werewolf in London isn't necessarily a fantastic film, but what it definitely is is fun, entertaining and memorable. Based on the familiar Wolf Man tale, the film recreates the story in the alternative "80's" modern world of England. This offers the fantasy scenarios to occur within familiar London locations likely giving the only opportunity to see a horror film based there.
Whilst the two American actors might not start off the film with the greatest of acting, it is quickly forgotten about as a whose who of British TV pops up from Brian Glover and Rik Mayall to Frank Oz and Alan Ford.
However, if there is anything that became part of history due to the film it would be the realistic transformation sequence. A moment that secured an Oscar and stills hold up today. The film is worth seeing for this scene alone.
Not aiming to take itself seriously, An American Werewolf in London still manages to contain a number of scary moments including a wonderful sequence on the underground. Not to be taken as a pure horror film, it is there to be enjoyed as it was meant to be enjoyed.
