Review of An American in Paris (1951) by Steve S — 24 Oct 2007
** (out of four).
I'm going to get crap for this review, but to me "An American in Paris", along with "Gigi", is one of the most undeserving Best Picture Winners in Academy Award history. While it is not a terrible film, it seems cheap to me and Gene Kelly is very annoying. I cannot figure out how this film won over the like of "A Place in the Sun" and "A Streetcar Named Desire". Even back when it won the Oscar night crowd was shocked. It is reported that loud gasps were heard throughtout the room. I'm still gasping.
Gene Kelly plays an American G.I. who stays in Paris after the war to learn painting. He falls for Leslie Caron.
