Review of An American in Paris (1951) by Daniel A — 18 Jun 2011
Overall, I didn't like this movie. The plot was fine, but the characters weren't anything special. There wasn't anything really memorable about any of the songs or dances until the 15+ minute dance number at the end (which is why I'm giving it an extra star). I mean when Gene Kelly and that other guy (have no idea who he was) started singing "'S Wonderful", I was really irritated because that song is originally from "Funny Face", which also has music by George Gershwin, but seriously...he couldn't write ONE more song?
Anyway, back to the dance number at the end...if they would have extended that to 113 minutes, the movie as a whole would have been much more entertaining. I learned everything I needed to know about the story from that extended dance sequence. It was just so beautifully done and once again, Gene Kelly is BRILLIANT. Can't help but smile while he's dancing on-screen. Leslie Caron is a beautiful dancer as well and has great stage presence. I really loved watching her ballet numbers.
