Review of An American in Paris (1951) by Adrian B — 29 Jan 2012
Though it is respected as one of the greatest musicals, especially from the MGM era, many have criticized for its plot, it being the recipient of Best Picture of the year, and some acting, especially with Leslie Caron. I admit the plot is flawed, with a bizarre love affair of Gene Kelly split between Leslie Caron and Nina Foch's character. It is a little odd. As well, Caron seems a little reserved (although I still really liked it). However, any flaws in the film are vastly overshadowed by the joy of watching it, with its grand entertainment value. Its plot revolves around a former American soldier who has become a poor artist and finds love in a shy French girl. It is essentially a simple fairy tale. The greatness of this film comes from the singing and dance numbers. The songs, sung by Gene Kelly, are superb and absolutely memorable, and to me, that is an important aspect for a musical. For instance "S'Wonderful" and "I Got Rhythm" are brilliantly sung. In addition, and this one of the major points of the film, is the 20 minute ballet finale. It is also filmed in terrific colour, one of the best movies in colour on reel of all films, and the scenes with Oscar Levant in his mind as a conductor are very entertaining. I really enjoy this and it, along with "Singin' in the Rain" and "On the Town" is one of the best musical films of all time.
One little other note is it being the recipient for Best Picture. This, for me, is the best film of 1951, although I understand there is some criticism for its winning, especially since "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Strangers on a Train," "The African Queen," and number of big films were released that year. Also, the fact that "Singin' in the Rain" was totally ignored the next year by the Academy Awards in 1952. Oh well, I think it is still a great Best Picture winner.
